Fitness trends are all around us these days especially as it relates to losing weight and fitness. Often after a holiday or a particularly terrible eating stint, people want to start a cleanse in order to flush out their systems and start fresh. This is great for your mentality; however, it’s completely unnecessary as a way to “jump start” your fitness journey.

According to Wiki; Detoxification (often shortened to detox and sometimes called body cleansing) is a type of alternative medicine treatment which aims to rid the body of unspecified “toxins” – substances that proponents claim have accumulated in the body and have undesirable short-term or long-term effects on individual health. Activities commonly associated with detoxification include dieting, fasting, consuming exclusively or avoiding specific foods (such as fats, carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, juices, herbs, or water), colon cleansing, chelation therapy, and the removal of dental fillings containing amalgam.
Cleanses are marketed to people promising they will lose anywhere from five to ten pounds over the course of three days to a week. What this usually entails is limiting solid food intake and what you do eat are easily digestible foods such as cucumbers and tomatoes or even cabbage, which has a diuretic property on its own. Eating in this manner is supposed to flush out toxins in your body, but all it does is make you lose water weight. This might sound good, but all water weight does is come right back. You may lose five pounds after the cleanse, but when you begin eating again it’ll come back.
So, what should you do instead? Eat a healthy and wholesome food diet. Your body has a way of naturally cleaning itself out without your help. The human body was designed in that way and no amount of cabbage cleanse, or juice cleanse, is going to make it function any better. The gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidneys, and lungs are already doing a great job of eliminating waste in our bodies.
When starting a fitness routine and deciding you want to “jump start” it, instead of taking out an entire food group for a few days, start by cutting out the processed foods and eat wholesome ones. Lean meats like chicken and turkey. Good carbs like wheat pasta and rice, and healthy fats like olive oil and avocado. The best way to jump start your fitness is by doing just that: starting.
Unless cleansing is part of your religious beliefs, it is just not necessary. The concept has received criticism from scientists and health organizations for its unsound scientific basis and lack of evidence for the claims made. The “toxins” usually remain undefined. Most scientists describe detox diets and commercial products as “a waste of time and money”, while the British Dietetic Association called the idea “nonsense” and a “marketing myth”.
Opt for adding fresh, raw fruits and veggies to your whole foods diet for optimal health.
